You are either completely new to Collegiate Shag or you have had a Shag taster class or two. You are interested in progressing through a beginner level over the course of the weekend by undertaking a 6-hour intensive Shag training.
There will be an absolute beginner Shag taster class at the start of the Friday night party, which is optional. This is to give you some basics so that you can still enjoy the Friday party by being able to dance some Shag.
The Ladybird core classes that start on Saturday will still cover the basic footwork, but it will be reasonably pacey – therefore, if you pick things up quickly then you are probably ok to miss the Friday night class, but if you feel you would benefit from more time spent on the basics, you may want to attend the Friday night class as well.
Your core class teachers for the weekend will be Chott andNiomi. You will be able to experience the other teachers through the taster andthemed classes we will have on offer.
You are comfortable with the basic 6-count double time Shag footwork, you can execute basic moves like underarm turns, pass-bys and other fundamental Shag movements reasonably well. You can dance Shag in closed, open & side by side position. You now feel ready to delve deeper into technique and expand your repertoire of moves.
Before registering for this level, please take this mandatory self-test: dance Collegiate Shag with a partner who is at your level or higher, to the following tune using all 3 positions mentioned above. Be sure to dance to the whole song. If you lost your footwork more than once, was not able to keep your footwork in time with the tempo or struggled to execute more than one of the moves or transitions, please book for Ladybird.
Not only are you able to do the 6-count double time Shag footwork in your sleep,
but you are also able to execute rhythm changes like repeating quicks,
repeating slows or camel hops, and you are also adding some musicality to your
dancing like hitting breaks or flourishes in the music. Your repertoire of Shag
moves is fairly substantial, and your understanding of and ability with Shag
frame & connections is not too shabby either.
You do, however, recognise that there is room for growth, and you are ready to hone and refine your current skills while building more multi-layered and rhythmic movements on to your skill set.
Before registering for this level, please take this mandatory self-test: dance Collegiate Shag with a partner who is at your level or higher, to the following tune using closed, open and side by side positions. Be sure to dance to the whole song. If you lost your footwork more than once, was not able to keep your footwork in time with the tempo or struggled to execute more thanone of the moves or transitions, you aren’t quite ready for this level and
should therefore take the self-test for Grasshopper.
Collegiate Shag is your dance! Not only are you dancing it regularly in your own scene,
but you often travel to Shag events for classes and socials. You are most likely performing and/or competing in Shag at an advanced level. Your technique is pretty solid and your repertoire is vast, but you are ready for a serious challenge and to be pushed.
Before registering for this level, please take this mandatory self-test: dance Collegiate Shag with a partner who is at your level or higher, to the following tune using closed, open, side by side and tandem positions (yes, you should know tandem Shag & how to get in and out of it to register for this level).
Be sure to dance to the whole song. If you lost your footwork more than once, was not able to keep your footwork in time with the tempo or struggled to execute more than one of the moves or transitions, you aren’t quite ready for this level and should take the self-test for Bunny.
Welcome to our new invitational level!
This level will be reserved for a small selection of top Shag dancers. You are either teaching Collegiate Shag and/or you have travelled to many Collegiate Shag events where you have competed and placed/won in advanced Collegiate Shag competitions.
Please take the mandatory self-test to determine if Gazelle is right for you.
If you pass the Gazelle self-test above, please continue with the following instructions.
